Can synchronicities be embodied in an object, a painting or a book? What if the work was created at one time or another? Does the object then hold time within it? What if the period in which these things were created was imbued with collective or personal history?
In her artistic practice, Or Shloman depicts non-linear movement through time and space. She moves through the world constantly and the very act of travelling through the world, between different cities and countries, becomes a form of thought; and as she draws upon her memory, the flow of thought becomes non-linear. Her works invite the viewer to take part in an experience that unfolds gradually. Her primary medium, or the act of thinking, is drawing.
Usually, Shloman puts together an artist’s book and starts sketching in relation to a specific question she asks herself in the studio. From there, she begins to understand what the question is really about and releases drawings from the book. At the upcoming event, we will be opening several artist’s books, works created during periods of transition and are all linked to the collective and or her personal history.
In recent years, she had been asking herself what exactly she inherited. Initially, Shloman sought answers through philosophy and literature, then through astrology, and today through all these avenues; and particularly through mythologies associated with the region her family and she came from (Irak, Morocco and Israel/Palestine), in relation to the unfolding present.
The evening will be held mainly in English.
Or Shloman (*1992, Haifa) is a visual artist and astrologer who lives and works in Freiburg. She graduated with honors with a BFA from the Department of Fine Arts at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem, and was an exchange student at the Academy of Fine Arts (HGB) in Leipzig. Her work has been shown in solo exhibitions at Ahoi, Lucerne, CH; Mezo, Haifa, IR; and Gerem, Jerusalem, IR, among others. She has also participated in group exhibitions in Leipzig, DE; Dvir Gallery, Tel Aviv, IR; and Halal Bastudio, Tel Aviv, IR, among others.
